自1999年以来，南视觉美术馆（RCMARTMUSEUM）的前身红色经典艺术馆、经典画廊就致力于把自己的发展跟中国当代艺术的本土化进程联系起来。继2000年成功举办“新中国画大展”之后，2002年又独资承办了中国第一个三年展——首届中国艺术三年展。之后，南视觉美术馆着力于全面推出生于七十年代的青年艺术家，“未来考古学：第二届中国艺术三年展”的举办及其产生的巨大影响，成为这一战略思路的最好体现。两届三年展的举办使南视觉美术馆逐步完善了“另一种”三年展模式：一、就主体而言，它是民间机构投资的三年展；二、就内容而言，它是中国当代艺术的三年展；三、就地点而言，它是一个漂流的三年展。
此外，中国独立影像年度展、中国纪录片交流周已经成为南视觉美术馆的常设项目。这些大型展览的策划和运作表明，在国内为数众多的独立艺术空间中，南视觉美术馆超越了展馆的空间限制以及功能限制，被赋予了新的含义——它一直是以一个积极的独立主体，在较高的平台上参与和推动着中国当代艺术机制的建设，并正在通过自身的努力逐步向更高的水准发展。
目前，位于南京市北京西路72号的新址，正在进行大规模改造的南视觉美术馆，将更加适宜当代艺术的展示和交流。到2006年，新址所在的南京2021艺术区将建成为中国长江三角洲最重要的独立艺术区之一。

Since1999,RCM,followingitspredecessorsofClassicalRedGalleryandClassicalgallery,hasbeendevotingitselftolinkingitsowndevelopmentwiththeprocessofChinesecontemporaryarts.Afterthesuccessof“ExhibitionofNeo-ChinesePainting”heldinShanghaiandNanjingin2000,RCMinitistedthefirstChinesetriennialexhibition-the1stTrienialofChineseArtGuangzhouwithitssoleinvestment.Sincethen,theseldom-usedCarpetmethod(selectingartpiecesthroughoutallgalleries)whichwasadoptedinthepreparationofthe“ArcheologyoftheFuture;theExhibitionofthe2ndTriennialofChineseArts”extendedgreatinfluenceincontemporaryChineseartarenathroughthewayofboththeprocessandthefinalexhibitionandpublishing.Theholdingofthesetwoexhibitionshasbeengraduallysettingupanewexhibitionmode-“theAlienatedGenre”:1.Itisanexhibitioninvestedbynon-governmetinstitute.2.ItistheexhibitionofcontemporaryChinesearts.3.Itisamobileexhibition.
AndtheAnnualexhibitionoftheindependentfilmsandtheExchangeWeekoftheChineseDocumentaryhavebecometheregularactivitiesoftheRCM.Somemulti-fieldsandtrans-mediaactivitieshavegainedgreatattentionofRCM.Allthesegreatexhibitionandoperationexpressclearlythatamongnumerousdemosticindependentartfacilities,RCMhasbrokenthelimitsofbothspaceandfunctionofagalleryandhasbeengrantedabrand-newimplication.Servingasandactiveindependententity,RCMhasalwaysbeenparticipatingandpromotingtheconstructionofcontemporaryChineseArtmechanismanditsparesnoenhanceitselftohigherlevel.Alarge-scaledocumentaryfilm,SailingintheOcean-AJourneytoChineseContemparyArt,investedbyRCManddirectedbyfamousdirectedbyfamousdirectorWangxiaoshuaiisonthewayofshooting.ThiswillbethefiresthistotyofChinesecontemporaryartinvideoform.OnJuly29th,wewillholdtheExhibitionofChineseInkpaintingLiteratureinNanjingwhichwillsummarizetheinkpaintingachievementofChinasincethebeginningofreformandopening-updrive.
June2006,thenewbuildingofRCMdesignedbyfamousarchitector,ZhangLei,inWestBeijingroad72#BldNO.1wasformallyestablished.
